Design in the Islands: Explore the History and Development of Ewa Beach

Ewa Beach has evolved from an agricultural region into a bustling residential community. It played a vital role as a farming area with fishing villages. Our Native ancestors developed the ahupua'a, a highly sustainable land and natural resource management system.

The establishment of the Ewa Plantation Company in 1890 brought sugar cane production and an influx of immigrant workers from Japan, the Philippines, China, and Portugal. The Oahu Railway and Land Company built a rail line in 1889 to transport sugar cane from Ewa to Honolulu, which brought infrastructure and communication to the region.

In the 1940s, the establishment of Barbers Point Naval Air Station marked a turning point, which resulted in population growth. Ewa Beach also saw the Battle of Ewa Plain, which was part of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The closure of Ewa's sugar plantations in the late 20th century, with the last harvest in 1995, led to the conversion of former plantation lands into housing communities.

The City and County of Honolulu acquired the Ewa Villages area in the early 1980s. In the 1990s, revitalization efforts were undertaken to address the population boom and the need for affordable housing in the Ewa region despite challenges faced by the community during the transition.

Today, Ewa Beach continues to evolve while preserving its historical roots. The area has a rich cultural heritage, with attractions like the Hawaiian Railway Society offering vintage train rides and cultural events. Ewa Beach boasts stunning beaches, world-class golf courses, and a thriving real estate market.

Vibrant Lifestyles: Mahalo, Justice Richardson!

Due to Justice William S. Richardson's 1968 landmark ruling, Hawaii beaches are public property. The Hawaii Supreme Court rejected exclusive rights and upheld the sharing of natural resources, acknowledging ancient Hawaiian traditions and customs regarding public access to beaches. Consequently, public access to beaches was granted, and restrictions by hotels and shoreline homeowners were lifted.

White Plains Beach in Ewa is a perfect example and spot for surfing lessons, thanks to the offshore reef that keeps the waves relatively calm. It is especially ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. The beach also has a designated swimming area separate from the surfing area.

The beach features several amenities, including indoor and outdoor showers, volleyball courts, beach access wheelchairs, and a patio area that can be rented for gatherings. Gear rentals such as surfboards, bodyboards, and fins are available on-site.

White Plains Beach is usually less crowded than the famous Waikiki Beach. However, it can get quite busy on weekends when residents come to enjoy the sand, surf, and BBQ facilities. This natural resource, White Plains Beach, is a beautiful place that everyone can enjoy. Let's ensure that we preserve its beauty for generations to come. Mahalo, Justice Richardson!
