Design in the Islands: The Start, 1960s

Makakilo, an area with breathtaking views of Honolulu, has undergone significant development in two major waves. The first wave began in the early 1960s, with Finance Factors leasing land from the Campbell Estate. The construction started at the base of the hillside and gradually progressed upwards. The second wave occurred during the post-2000 years, focusing on the higher elevations but not exclusively. Both waves resulted in the construction of single-family homes and townhome communities in Makakilo.

The visionary James Campbell recognized the potential of the Ewa Plain and played a crucial role in its development. His sugar plantation put this part of the island on the map. Additionally, the wartime expansion of Barber's Point Navy base helped transform a small airfield into a significant part of Hawaii's military presence, which, in turn, connected the Makakilo district more closely to Honolulu's shipping and economic center.

Makakilo is located in Ewa on Oahu, above Kapolei City. As of the 2020 census, almost 20,000 residents call Makakilo home.

Vibrant Lifestyles: Pu`u Makakilo

Pu`u Makakilo, also known as Mount Makakilo, is an undeniable historical site that demands a visit to the Makakilo area of Oahu. The site was an ancient meeting place for Kahuna Kilokilo, Hawaiian astronomers who gathered there to interpret celestial messages. The name "Makakilo" accurately reflects the site's historical significance as an "observing eye" used to observe the sky.

With a peak rising to 1,000 feet on the foothills of the Waianae Mountains directly above Kapolei, Pu`u Makakilo offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. The meeting site at the lowest elevation point on the Waianae Mountain Range is a powerful reminder of Hawaii's deep cultural roots and spiritual significance.

Today, Pu`u Makakilo remains an essential historical site, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to gain insight into Hawaii's rich cultural heritage and the significance of astronomy in ancient Hawaiian society. It is an undeniable reminder of the area's deep roots in Hawaiian history and spirituality.

Oahu Neighborhoods: Stunning Views

The views from Makakilo are simply spectacular! With its panoramic vistas of Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, and the Waikiki skyline, you're in for a treat that will leave you breathless. And the sunset view is fantastic!

And if you're looking for respite from the heat, Makakilo is the place to be. The higher elevation of Makakilo is cooler than the lower Makakilo and Kapolei, making it the perfect destination for anyone who wants to experience Hawaii's natural beauty in all its glory.

Real Estate in Honolulu: What's happening in Makakilo?

Makakilo is military-friendly, with cool climates in the upper elevations and many family-friendly activities. It is minutes from the “Second City” of Kapolei, with easy access to entertainment, shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, and a plethora of activities. Wet’n’Wild Water Park offers a variety of activities for kids, teens, and adults to enjoy.

Military families are a large component of Makakilo's demographics, and Naval Air Station Barber’s Point is nearby.

The Navy decommissioned Barber’s Point in 1998 and turned it over to the State of Hawaii for use as Kalaeloa Airport. Today, Kalaeloa Airport (JFR) consists of 757 acres and is an alternate landing site for Honolulu International Airport and general aviation purposes.
