Design in the Islands: Let’s explore the communities of Mililani.

Mililani consists of the original community called the Mililani Area and Mililani Mauka. It is for all demographics—new married couples, young families, established families, retirees, and elderly individuals. Properties are available for each group: condominiums, townhomes, planned unit development (PUD), single-family homes, retirement communities for independent seniors, and assisted living for older people.

Mililani was developed over 40 years. In 2008, the final homes were built and sold in Mililani. More than 50,000 residents enjoy the wide tree-lined streets, broad open spaces, and business opportunities.

Mililani, which means “to praise, exalt; to give thanks; to treat as a favorite,” has streets named for stars, days, and nights - a daily reminder.

Vibrant Lifestyles: How does Mililani serve its neighbors?

Mililani is the perfect place for all who love the outdoors. With 21 parks and seven recreational centers, there are endless fun and active opportunities for everyone.

The parks are designed for sports lovers, with courts and fields for tennis, soccer, baseball, football, hockey, and pickleball. The playgrounds are also a hit with kids, featuring swings and jungle gyms that entertain them for hours.

If you're looking for aquatic activities, the seven recreation centers are the place to be! You can take swim lessons, join aquatic programs, and become certified lifeguards. And if you're in the mood for a barbecue, there are plenty of pavilions for rent.

Mililani also offers a variety of clubs and organizations that meet at the recreation centers, including classes for all ages.

Mililani is the perfect blend of fun and fitness for the whole family!

Oahu Neighborhoods: Mililani, the childhood home of John Papa I’i

Mililani Mauka has a rich history that goes back to John Papa I'i, the son of a Chief from the Big Island. He spent most of his childhood exploring the Mililani area as a personal attendant to boyhood Kamehameha II. His services to the King and the Islands were repaid in 1850 by King Kamehameha III, who granted him the lands of the entire ahupa'a, including his childhood home; it was a fitting reward for his loyal services.

It is said that John Papa I'i named the area above the Kipapa Gulch "Mililani," which became an official name more than a century later. He had an infectious love for the land and spent his lifetime passionately caring for it.

John I'i lived through several eras of the Kamehameha Dynasty. He was born during Kamehameha I's autocratic rule and continued to live through the transition period of rule by kings and chiefs. His life came to an end during the rule of the constitutional monarchy. He was raised under the Kapu system and later became a Christian minister.

After he died in 1870, the lands were put in trust and sold to Castle & Cooke, who purchased the lands, including what we now know as Mililani Mauka and much of the remaining center of the Island. The untouched lands soon turned into massive, flourishing plantations producing sugar and pineapple crops that put Hawaii on the economic map.

Mililani Mauka remained farmland throughout its history, providing almost a century of bountiful harvests from the soil.
