Design in the Islands: History of Waikele
Waikele was originally a large land division known as an ahupua'a that extended from the Koolau Mountains down to the sea. Waikele means "muddy water" in Hawaiian, which refers to the Waikele Stream that flowed through the area.
In 1897, the Oahu Sugar Company was founded and started cultivating sugarcane across 10,000 acres, including Waipahu, Waipio, and Waikele. For almost a century, sugar became the primary industry in the region.
The sugar company built housing and other facilities for its workers to support its operations, which later became the modern Waipahu area.
In 1991, the Amfac Corporation started developing the Waikele area by building two multifamily complexes and a single-family subdivision. This began Waikele's transformation into a master-planned residential community with more townhomes, single-family homes, parks, a golf course, and the Waikele Premium Outlets shopping center.
Amfac Corporation gradually sold off most of its assets as the sugar industry declined after being a dominant sugar and land development company in Hawaii.
