Design in the Islands: A Comparative Look at Two Oahu Communities

Waipio Gentry and Koa Ridge are master-planned communities in Central Oahu, but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart. Waipio Gentry is an established community that was built in 1979 on 510 acres, while Koa Ridge is a new development by Castle & Cooke on approximately 579 acres.

Waipio Gentry offers a mix of residential properties, parks, and amenities, making it an ideal place for families and individuals looking for a complete living experience. On the other hand, Koa Ridge aims to provide a modern "surban" living concept, which blends urban conveniences with suburban comforts. The community will feature a variety of housing options, a community center, schools, parks, shopping areas, and a 7.5-mile Hoʽāla Trail that will connect different parts of the community. The Koa Ridge community has residential sustainability initiatives. Read more about the initiatives.

In contrast, Waipio Gentry is an existing neighborhood with all its amenities and established infrastructure. It offers views of the Waianae Mountain range, access to Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Park, and many eateries and restaurants. Waipio Gentry also has business parks, car dealerships, a medical clinic, and a Costco Warehouse, making it a convenient location for residents who want everything in one place.

Vibrant Lifestyles: Honoring a Trailblazer in Hawaii

Patsy T. Mink (D-HI) was a trailblazer in American politics. She was the first woman of color and Asian American to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly to promote women's rights, civil rights, and economic justice. Her most significant achievement was the passing and defense of Title IX, a law that allowed girls and women to participate in school sports and education more broadly.

Established in 2001, operated by the City and County of Honolulu, and renamed in 2007 in honor of Patsy T. Mink, the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Park is 269 acres along Kamehameha Highway in Waipio. The park offers a wide variety of sports facilities and amenities for visitors to enjoy, including:

  • 20-court tennis center

  • Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center

  • Four youth baseball diamonds

  • Four regulation-size baseball diamonds

  • Four regulation softball fields

  • Multipurpose fields

  • 20-lane archery range

  • Trails

  • Olympic-sized swimming pool

  • Off-leash dog park

This maps the baseball and softball fields, tennis complex, aquatics complex, walking trails, archery range, and multipurpose fields. Parking, restrooms, playgrounds, and the dining facility are also shown.

Oahu Neighborhoods: Island Frenzy: Unveiling Hawaii's Costco Craze!

The cost of living in Hawaii is high. Do you want to stretch your dollar further and maximize your shopping trips? If so, Costco in Waipio is for you.

Costco's family-focused culture aligns with Hawaii's values of family, food, and the outdoors, making it the ultimate shopping destination for locals. Its bulk purchases are particularly advantageous for those living in multigenerational households. Buying in bulk is an economically intelligent choice that helps to save money and prepare for unexpected rushes for supplies caused by hurricanes, the pandemic, or labor disputes.

In February 2024, Hawaii's median single-family home price was over $1,000,000. When at Costco, rest assured that you're getting quality products at affordable prices. Costco's commitment to quality and affordability ensures that customers always get the best value for their money.

Costco is the perfect shopping destination for locals who appreciate quality products at affordable prices.
